Sector
Sectors included in the scope of the EUDR such as palm oil, coffee, cocoa, cattle, wood, and rubber.

The challenge
With the introduction of the EUDR, competent authorities (CAs) face the complex task of implementing a feasible risk-based audit approach. This challenge is heightened by the novelty of the regulation, limiting access to examples or established best practices. BLE needed a structured framework for risk-based audits to ensure effective compliance monitoring under the EUDR.

Our approach
In 2024, ASI successfully completed a project with BLE aimed at designing and operationalizing robust audit systems for EUDR compliance. Key deliverables included:

One

Audit Requirements

Development of comprehensive audit requirements for risk-based controls.

Two

Evaluation System

Creation of a detailed evaluation framework aligned with the audit requirements.

Three

Catalogue of Remedial Measures

Development of a structured catalogue of remedial actions to address identified non-compliances or deviations from EUDR requirements.

Four

Audit Concept Design

Formulation of a comprehensive audit concept for the design of the audit procedures.

Five

Training for BLE Personnel

Conducted tailored training sessions for BLE staff to ensure they are well-equipped to implement the audit framework.

Sector
Natural rubber

The challenge
Establishing GPSNR’s assurance model implementation faces significant challenges.

Firstly, achieving industry-wide alignment is complex due to the diverse global natural rubber industry.

Secondly, defining roles and responsibilities becomes intricate with multiple involved actors.

Thirdly, given that much of the natural rubber supply comes from smallholders, integrating a robust risk-based approach into the assurance model is crucial.

Lastly, GPSNR members’ journey offers ongoing improvement prospects, demanding careful attention to maintain compatibility and credibility throughout their evolving progress.

One

Draft assurance framework

Draft GPSNR Assurance Framework development including: 1. Assurance Protocol; 2. Remediation Protocol; 3. Implementation Targets.

Two

Membership consultation

Collect feedback from GPSNR members on the draft assurance framework and implement necessary adjustments.

Three

Pilot testing of the assurance model

Trial implementation of the assurance model including assessments and development of reports.

Four

Finalization of the framework

Revision and finalization of the assurance model based on learnings from the pilot tests.
